If you know me pretty well, sort of slightly or even if I’m barely and acquaintance to you, you’ll know that I’m a little bit of a slob. I don’t try to be; I attempt to clean up my little messes constantly throughout the week. I always make my bed and put my coffee cups away, but somehow my messes always take on a life of their own and find a way to grow into a tiny mountain.
Not surprisingly, my closet has become a little bit of an obstacle. I mean, I can generally find what I’m looking for when I need it, but if I’m in a hurry, then I’m sort of out of luck. The worst part is, I end up wearing the same clothes over and over again simply because I forget what I own.
This is what started the impromptu spring-cleaning and reorganizing of my closet. After doing some research and collecting tips from Marie Kondo’s book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, I started on my cleaning experiment.
If you’re looking to tackle your closet, here are 3 simple steps that really helped me:
Step 1: Take everything out of your closet (even the hangers) and go through each article of clothing. If you haven’t worn an item in more than a year, it’s probably a good idea to get rid of it. As Marie Kondo says, be wary of items that you keep for nostalgic reasons. If it serves no purpose to you, then it’s time to part ways.
Step 2: Once you have a pile of clothes you want to keep, remove all of those icky white plastic hangers from your life. Even though they may not seem like it, the bulkiness of the hangers actually take up space in your closet. I invested in purchasing black fabric-covered hangers that you can pick up almost everywhere now. Not only do they have more grip (so that you can avoid a mess of clothes on the floor of your closet), but they’re also fairly slim and give lots of room in between your clothes. Now I can finally figure out what I own!
Step 3: Sort by style. This may feel a little tedious at first, but if you pair your clothes in your closet with similar styles, then your life becomes so much easier when you’re looking for a specific piece of clothing. The one rule of this tip is to actually keep up with it. Of course, there are going to be so many nights when you’re too lazy to put that top or dress back into its space in the closet — but just remember, the more you let it get out of hand, the messier your closet will become.
Whether you’re doing some spring-cleaning, moving to a new place or looking to re-energize your closets, these 3 small steps make such a big change in your closet (and therefore, the rest of your life).
With love,
Gosh I’m the worse at spring cleaning. I always get up getting rid of so much but it never seems to decrease the size of my closet ha.

It’s soooo hard sometimes (I literally have another room as my closet), but it’s so worth it to rediscover what you already have!

Good tips! I tend to go through mine pretty regularly in small stages rather than a big, all at once clean out. Maybe I need to try it!

What is more embarrassing is having hangers from the dry cleaners in your wardrobe still. You just forget about them and then throw them away with pride. Ha ha I loved this post so much great advice and a good way to start summer off right 🙂

I always fail to keep tidy, everything always ends up a mess! No matter how hard I try lol.
Raindrops of Sapphire
Haha that happens too! Honestly, just try to keep on top of it in little ways whenever you have the time. That way it doesn’t feel like a huge process and even though it might not be the cleanest, you’ll still feel better about it!

I don’t organize my closet often, but when i do, i do it cheerfully! It’s kinda of pleasant to reorgonize, chose what should stay and what should not. And we also redescover clothing parts that was lost deep in the closet. I loved your skirt.
